Turkeys on Wheels – Christmas Dinner Wish
On Christmas morning, when many of us are still bleary eyed as the kids joyously shout, “Santa came!”, an intrepid corps of Stouffvillians is at work providing a festive Christmas dinner for their fellow townspeople.
“Last year we delivered just over 550 meals around noon hour on Christmas Day”, said Councillor Maurice Smith.
For the past 11 years, he and his wife Jane have been spearheading the delivery of the meals, which are free of charge, to those who wouldn’t otherwise have a festive dinner. This year, the Smiths are working together with about 40 volunteers – but more are always welcome.
Last year, more than 30 people each cooked a donated turkey in their own kitchen before bringing it to “Christmas headquarters” at Eastridge Evangelical Missionary Church in Stouffville, which generously makes this space available for this project each year.
From 7 to 11 a.m. on Christmas Day, it is “hectic” at the church, Councillor Smith noted wryly.
That’s when the turkeys and hams are apportioned, pies sliced up and the dinners carefully assembled with vegetables, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more.
Volunteer drivers scrape the ice and snow off their cars to deliver the meals along with a cheery Christmas greeting for the recipients.
“Stouffville is such a generous community,” Mr. Smith said. “People in Stouffville are prepared to volunteer.”
This Christmas dinner tradition was originally started by former Stouffville resident and owner of the Stouffville Market, Norm Clements, and his wife Nancy, over 20 years ago as a sit-down meal at the market. It changed to the home delivery format four years ago.
Preparations for the meal delivery start in October with many volunteers returning year after year. A grant from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and from members of the community make this annual dinner possible.
If you wish to receive a Christmas Dinner Wish meal, make a donation or volunteer, please call or e-mail ahead of time. Volunteers are urged to register in advance so that their services can be best used. Phone 647-404-1138 or e-mail at email@example.com
