COUNCIL OPENS MEMORIAL PARK ROAD

TOWN COUNCIL OPENS MEMORIAL PARK ROAD AFTER PUBLIC COMPLAINTS

Burkholder Street to open immediately, to be part of traffic study in spring 2019

WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE – Whitchurch-Stouffville Council this afternoon approved the immediate opening of Burkholder Street from Park Drive to Franklin Street in Stouffville’s Memorial Park.

The road, which has been closed since the summer because of citizens safety concerns, was reopened after Ward 6 Councillor Sue Sherban stated she has received numerous complaints from residents who live in the area because they cannot access roads to the south of the park.

Both Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt and Ward 4 Councillor Rick Upton said the original closure was a “knee-jerk” reaction by Council.

As part of the motion, Franklin Street will also be opened, and a three-way stop will be implemented at its intersection with Burkholder Street. Franklin Street runs off Burkholder Street into the parking lot of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre on Park Drive.

Staff will consider options that will address access, traffic flow and safety concerns regarding the two roads, and on neighbouring Lloyd Street, in the spring of 2019. Burkholder Street and Franklin Street will be part of the Memorial Park Master Plan and Lloyd Street will be part of the Main Street Master Plan.
